SUNSHINE CLUB.
MRS J. W. McCONNON FAREWELLED.
Bright and enjoyable was the monthly social of the Palmerston North Sunshine Club, which was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms, yesterday afternoon. The hostesses were Mesdames W. H. Boon, B. F. Mitchell, J. Garde Grimshaw, and J. W. Ridley. Prunus blossom prettily decorated the room, and the afternoon tea table was graced with Iceland poppies. The programme opened with community singing under the leadership of Mrs W. Bigham, with Mrs Boon at the piano, and this was entered into with zest. Members of the Townswomen’s Guild glee choir were present, and they gave great pleasure by singing “The -Old Folk’s Medley,” and later “Hark! Hark! The Lark” and “John Peel.” The choir was conducted by Mrs Bigham, and Mrs H. Pierard was pianiste. Two interesting competitions were won by Mrs G. E. Stevens and Mrs A. S. Bayliss. Mrs Bigham kindly contributed “The Floral Dance,” which is always popular.
The opportunity was taken by the president (Mrs E. L. Christian) to farewell Mrs J. W, McConnon, who left after the meeting by car for Wellington, where she will make her future home. In asking Mrs McConnon to accept a crystal vase, on behalf of the members, Mrs Christian said that Mrs McConnon was one of the 12 foundation members of the club, and had been a splendid worker, whose good advice and sound common sense had proved invaluable to the club. She expressed pleasure in the fact that Mrs McConnon’s health had improved after her recent serious illness, and said that she hoped that Mrs McConnon would be very happy in ‘Wellington. In thanking members for the gut, Mrs McConnon said how much she had enjoyed being a member of the club, and that she was proud to have been associated with women who were anxious to spread sunshine. It had been a delight to her that the club endeavoured to brighten the lives of old people, the eventide of whose lives she thought should be made as happy as possible. Sho believed that the club would go ahead. In 25 years she had formed associations which it was not easy to break, she added. Musical honours and cheers were accorded Mrs McConnon. The £1 Is for last month will bo donated to the Red Cross Society, and for this month to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Five new members were enrolled yesterday, the total membership now numbering 36.
