HAWKE'S BAY VICTORY.

DEFEAT OF SOUTHLAND

Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Aug. 19

The Hawke’s Bay Rugby representatives gained their sixth victory of the season this afternoon when they defeated the touring Southland team by 19 points to five. The game was interesting and bright, with plenty of enterprising back play on. the part of Hawke’s Bay, while the forwards of both sides showed good form, especially in the open. Though Hawke’s Bay was beaten for the ball in the scrums it more than made amends in the ruck and loose and was definitely superior in the rearguard. The three Hawke’s Bay All Blacks, Dalton, Jackson' and Reid, were outstanding among the forwards, with Devine and Apsey among the backs. The best Southland forward was Irwin, with the All Black Ward and S. Purdue next. Hawke’s Bay led by eleven to nil at half-time, Apsey, Jackson and Devine scoring tries and Herbert converting one. In the second spell Devine and Apsey scored tries, Herbert converting one for the Bay. Irwin scored a try and Wesney converted for Southland.
