SPRINGBOK’S INJURY.
DU TOIT OUT FOR TOUR. . BASE OF SPINE AFFECTED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 20.Ail unexpected change in the Springbok team to play Canterbury was announced at 12.30 to-day after the players had returned from practice at Lancaster Park. Du Toit, the big loose forward from Transvaal, who was injured in the match against New South Wales in July but was thought to have recovered, is now unlikely to play for the rest of the tour.'An X-ray examination disclosed that the break a.t the base of the spine has not mended as was anticipated, and he definitely should not have been playing in the Blenheim match. It is rather amazing that he was able to see that fixture out without collapsing. The permanent loss of Ilu Toit has come rather as a shock to the South Africans, as he was expected to be a strong candidate for the second Test side. Bastard will replace Du Toit on the side of the scrum. Craven visited a doctor this morning. He is suffering from the severe leg injury received in the match at Blenheim, although he is able to walk without a noticeable limp. He complained this morning that his leg was “dead.”
