MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. In tlio presence of a fair number of spectators the Manawatu .Wrestling Association staged its annual championship tourney in the Opera House last evening. Entries were good and competition keen for the majority of the titles, and an excellent night’s entertainment was provided. Mr W. Nicholls was the referee, Mr J. Purves stage manager, Mr O. N. Rabono announcer, and Mr West In J. Smith the timekeeper. At the conclusion of the bouts, Mr J. Hodgcns, M.P., presented the trophies and certificates to the new title-holders, who are as follow: Bantamweight.—W. Weston. Featherweight.—J. Eokersley. Lightweight.—R. de Oleenc. Welterweight.—T. Waldron. Middleweight.*—W. Cud by. There were no entries in the lightheavyweight or heavyweight divisions. Tlio Police Shield, awarded annually to the most scientific wrestler, was won by J. Clark. Previous winners were: H. Benton (1932), E. Anthony (1933), G. Ross (1931), E. Pinker (1935), and W. Weston (1930). A special trophy for the most aggressive wrestler was awarded to P. Gowau.

Results in detail are:— . BANTAMWEIGHT. Final. IV. Weston (Palmerston North) 8.9, defeated D. McPherson (Palmerston North) 8.8, by two tails. McPherson, who appeared the previous evening in the boxing championships, showed considerable ability as a wrestler last night, but he had-to concede a fall to Weston in the first round. In the second honours were fairly even, but tiie filial round suw Weston the aggressor most of the distance and i/e secured the winning fall. These were the only entrants in the division.

LIGHTWEIGHT. M. Edhouse (Foilding), 10.2, defeated P. Moss (Rongotea), 9.12, by a single lull. ' It. Clark (Palmerston North), 10.5, secured a points decision over C. Joltson (Palmerston North), 10.4 j. R. de Cleene (Palmerston North), 9.13, won by two straight falls from R. Reid (Palmerston North), 9.13. R. do Cleene showed too much l’ingcratt and secured a points decision over R. Clark. Final. —R. do defeated M. Edhouse by a fall in the last round. De Cleeno did not have things all his own way, however, and the Feilding boy put up a good performance. In the liual round, however, de Cleene gained the upper hand and secured a fall.

WELTERWEIGHT. T. Waldron (Rata), 11.33, scored over J. MeConachy (Palmerston North), 11.3, by two straight falls. L. E. Tantrum (Newbury), 10.8, defeated 11. Taylor (Palmerston North), 10.11, on points. G. Young (Milson), 11.0, secured two straight falls over A. Wheeler (Palmerston North), 10.12. Final.—Waldron defeated Yonng on points. The first two rounds were very even, with neither man securing a fall. In the third, however, Waldron forced the pace and secured the decision. There was not a great deal of life in the encounter. Tantrum, winner of an earlier bout, withdrew owing to an injured shoulder.

MIDDLEWEIGHT. W. Cudby (Palmerston North), 11.11, defeated B. McCasham (Palmerston North), 12.4, by two straight falls. E. Kent (Palmerston North), 11.7, won from J. MeConachy (Palmerston North) by default. J. Beaumont (Palmerston North), 12.3, won from W. Goodall (Palmerston North), 11.7, by two straight falls. . ' - ) P. Gowan (Palmerston North), 12.1, secured two falls over F. Kent. I W. Cudby defeated M. Murrell (Palmerston North), 11.10, by a single fall in the last round. • P. Gowan.scored by one fall over J. j Beaumont. Final.—Cudby defeated Gowan on J points. Gowan used his slight advantage in weight in the first round, but j he found Cudby a tough proposition. Ho almost secured a fall in the second, but the gong saved Cudby, who went all out in tlio final round to get a points decision.

WADE BEATS MARSHALL. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 18. In a wrestling match to-night Glen Wade (15.7) beat Floyd Marshall (16.8) on points, the referee declaring Wade the winner after eacli had secur a fall, Marshall, in the filth round and Wade in the seventh. The bout was of eight rounds. Wade was more agijre.ssivo throughout.
