RETIRING OFFICIAL
TRIBUTES TO MR J. E. HEJtRYS.
Tributes to the services rendered to the Manawatu Racing Club over a long period of years by Mr J. E. Henrys, the retiring handicapper, were paid at last evening’s annual meeting of the club, and it was decided to place on record the club’s appreciation. Mr L. H. Collinson, who moved the resolution, said that Mr Henrys had been a wonderful handicapper and a great supporter of the club. “On occasions,” he added, “his handicaps may have been criticised, but one tiling is certain—his integrity has never ever been questioned.” (Applause.) Mr Collinson said that Mr Henrys had done more than most men to lift racing on to a higher plane. About 40 yeare ago ho had been a strong advocate of longer paces, stating that on every programme there should not be more than one race under a mile. How true hi 6 words had proved to be, continued the spea.ker, who added that racing would be better if more encouragement- was given to the breeding of staying horses. “And ‘4O years ago, too,” went on Mr Collinson, “Mr Henrys rvas an advocate for the totalisator, amid a storm of opposition. He had said it would pave the way to stronger clubs and keep racing clean. Again I say, how true his words proved to bo!” The motion was seconded by Mr H. R. Cooper, who said that in losing the services of Mr Henrys it seemed that the club was parting with a friend.
It w,as left in the hands of the committee to convey the club’s feelings in a tangible way.
