(By “Spectator.”)

It was a matter of congratulation, said Mr C. Louisson at last evening’s annual mooting of tho Manawatu Racing _ Club, that W. J. Broughton, tho local jockey, had headed the list of riders for tho season, while G. R. _ Tattersall, tho Palmerston North apprentice, was leading in the apprentices’ division. The announcement was roccivcd with applause. Day Dress Sold. Day Dress has boon 6old as. a brood maro, and she will bo mated with Man’s Pal this season. Day Dross was sold last year to a North Island owner, but owing to her developing lameness Sir Charles Clifford took her back. Sho has raced a good deal since, but has failed- to earn any money.

Awapuni Horses. Tangled, Hirangi and Evermore, who arc to compete at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting, were taken north yesterday by L. Knapp.

Recruits Required. In tho opinion of “Sentinel” some young lfocruits arc urgently required to strengthen the ranks of hurdlers and ’chasers. It is about time that owners and trainers woke up to the fact that worn-out flat racers are not the best material to be converted into jumpers.

An Unusual Happening. A. E. Ellis and L. J. Ellis went through the Grand National meteing without a win, a most unusual happening at a meeting at which these two horsemen are in action.

Versant Scratched. Vorsant was scratched for the Dunedin Handicap, tho open sprint event, at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting at 3.25 p.m. on Monday. Prospective Sale.

Sir Charles Clifford was asked on Saturday to put a price on Rival Hit, and tho three-year-old was placed under offer for three days to a commissioner acting for an Australian buyer. The figure is stated to b© more than 2000 guineas, and there is every possibility of a sale. being made as there are numerous inquiries from both Australia and New Zealand for young horses of the calibre of Rival Hit.

Riding Engagements. Riding engagements announced for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting on Saturday are as follow: —11. N. Wiggins,—Captain Bruce, Lord Val, Kilonsa, Mai de Mer. R. W. McTavish: Silver Glow, Versant, Palmint. R. Olive: Prince Colossus, Irish Boy. D. Green: Locknit. S. Tremain: Rajanya, Top Star. 11. Turvey: Count Rousillon. G. Cameron: Kiltowyn, Saccone. F. E. Baker: Adsuin. A. G. Murray : Ohmaha, Valmint. C. Thomson: Sleepy, Platter. Visit To New Zealand.

Captain E. Giles Bales, a well-known English North Country racing official, has left Britain for New Zealand, where lie intends to see some racing and to visit a number of friends in the country. Catalogue’s Pedigree.

The Winter Cup'winner Catalogue was got by Lord Quex from Catalini, a mare got in England by Catmint. Symbolism, the dam of Catalini, came to the Elderslie stud when carrying Catalini. Symbolism Was got by Symington from Amphora, by Amphion —Sierra, by Springfield. Amphora is a sister to Sundridge, the sire of a Derby winner in Sunstar. Sanda, the dam of Sierra, produced Sainfoin, who won the Derby, and got Rock Sand, a winner of tho Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, and St. Leger.

Tangled’s Good Displays. One of the best displays of fencing seen during the Grand National meeting was -put up by Tangled, who tho Hunt Cup and Aylesbury Steeples. He gave a great exhibition of fencing and stayed on well at tho right end of each race (says a Southern writer).

Favourites In Australia. Gold Rod and Talking are equal favourites for tho A.J.C. Epsom Handicap, and Mala is tho favourite for the Metropolitan. Talking is favourite for the Caulfield Cup with Courtcraft in the second line, while Ajax, Gene Tout, Hua and Mala are equal favourites for tho Melbourne Cup. English St. Leger. In the call-over of the card in London | last week for the St. Leger, to bo run at Doncaster on September 8, the order of favouritism was: Midday Sun, Perifox, and Solfo. If intentions are adhered to, Midday Sun will have one race before tho Doncaster classic. This will be in the mile and a half Manton Stakes at Salisbury on Ami got 23, a little more than a fortnight before tho St. Leger. Jockey’s Ambition. When W. Cook, the Australian jockey, first started to attract racing attention as a jockey he set himself a task which seem-

cd like reaching for tho moon, the riding of 1000 winners. During the season ended July 31 he took another step towards tho fulfilment 6f his ambition, for he headed tho winning jockeys’ list with a tally of 00 successes and five dead-heats. Cook claims that ho has now ridden just on 600 winners, including his 30-odd in India, and his only regret is that an injury will prevent his adding a few more to the total durmg the next two months.
