FAR EAST CONFLICT
JAPANESE BOMB CHAPEI RAILWAY JUNCTION DAMAGED
(United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph. Copyright.) Received August 18, 10.15 a.m. SHANGHAI, Aug. 17. Twelve Japanese ’planes bombed the suburb of .Ghapei for an hour to-day. Japanese aircraft also raided the junction of the Shanghai-Nanking and Shangliai-Hangchow railways, two miles outside Die North Station, destroying the lines, repair shops and w'ater towers. A second flight of seven ’planes completed the destruction; it bombed strategic points and started fires, tlie Chinese ineffectually retaliating with machine-guns.
While the Chinese were furiously attacking the Japanese 15 Britons were marooned for three hours under fire at the Foreign Settlement police station in North-Eastern Shanghai. The police arranged their safe conduct through the Japanese lines before yielding ground to the Japanese.
