NEW COURTHOUSE

COST OF £23,000. CEREMONY AT BLENHEIM. Per Press Association. BLENHEIM, Aug. 17. The foundation stone of Blenheim’s new £23,000 Courthouse, which is already half-completed, was laid by the Minister of Justice (Hon. 11. G. .11. Mason) this afternoon. Tho structure, which will be the most up-to-date building of its type in the Dominion, is being substantially built in heavily reinforced concrete. The Minister read the history of the administration of justice in the district from its inauguration by the appointment of an itinerant Magistrate in charge of the Cook Strait whaling stations in the year 1841. This historical account was subsequently sealed in the foundation stone. “Most Courthouses in New Zealand have not for a number of reasons been very suitable. For instance, the acoustic properties have not been good and tha.t is one of the first things we have given attention to,” remarked Mr Mason in an interview.
