INFLUX OF IMMIGRANTS.

SOUTHERN EUROPEANS

AUSTRALIANS’ PROTEST.

FREMANTLE, Aug. 17. The tourist-class passengers onboard the Otranto, which arrived to-day from London, held a meeting during the voyage and decided to forward a petition to the Commonwealth Government protesting against the large influx of Southern Europeans into Australia. The spokesman for the petitioners, Alderman J. Harrop, of Rockhampton, Queensland, who is returning from a holiday trip, said the Otranto had a large number of foreign migrants oil board who were not the typo wanted in Australia. He had read that three other liners were following with 600 nationals, chiefly Italians, Greeks* Yugoslavs, and Germans. A member of the Federal Parliament, Mr Roland Green, who was also a passenger, declared that he intended to bring the matter up in Parliament when he arrived.
