GLOOM IN LONDON.
MUST PROTECT INTERESTS
LONDON, Aug. 16. An intensely gloomy view of the Far Eastern situation is taken at Whitehall.
The Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) who is spending a holiday in Stitherlatidsliire, was telephoned several times by the Foreign Office and informed of the developments. The Times, in a leader, warns that it must not be forgotten that England, the United States and France, who are acting in close touch with one another, have important interests in the Far East, which they are bound to protect. A Singapore message says that the First Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment is embarking for Hong Kong immediately a ship is available. The First Battalion of the Second Punjabs is standing by. . The Chinese Embassy in London issued the Nanking spokesman’s statement that the bombing of the International Settlement oil Saturday was an unavoidable accident and regretting that innocent people suffered. Chinese airmen have been instructed as far as possible to avoid hostilities in the Settlement area except where the Japanese are operating.
