NEW JAPANESE OFFENSIVE. Received August 17. 11.20 a.m. SHANGHAI, Aug. 16. The firing ceased at Shanghai before midnight and activities were transfer-! red to Cape Yangtse-kiang, south of the mouth of tho Whangpoo, where it enters the Yangtse River. Here the Japanese are supporting the earlier landing at Liuho tc threaten the Chinese lines north of Shanghai. They launched a bombardment in order to protect the landing of further reinforcements in flat-bottomed boats with the object of advancing against the Chinese concentrations on the south hank of tho Whangpoo opposite Shanghai. The Japanese flagship Idnmo was moved down-stream, apparently to reinforce the bombardment. Six-inch shells from tho cruisers fell devastatingly among the Chinese troops, who were" armed only with trench mortars, machine-guns and rifles. The Japanese officers hope that this attack in the Yangtse-kiang-Whangpoo delta will precede the early control bf the Shanghai area.
