TANGIMOANA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TANGIMOANA, Aug. 14
The monthly meeting of the Tangimoana School Committee was held this week, there being present Messrs E. Spry (chairman), T. Keat, X. E. Devine, and A Carkeek (secretary). Reference was made to the loss the district had sustained through the death of the late Mr J. Anderson and a vote of condolenco was passed to ihis widow and young daughter, who was a pupil at the school. Correspondence from the Wanganui Education Board conveyed the pleasing information that the extra special grant to the committee would bo made a little later in the year lhe committee decided to ask the board to supply the school with a fire extinguisher, also a clock. The secretary reported that the trees for planting on Arbor Day had arrived and that Mr J. Mudford, the Education Board’s representative for this distinct, had accepted the committee’s invitation’ to be present and address the children. Oil Thursday (Arbor Day) all Tangimoana roads led to the school, where Mr Mudford gave an interesting address on tree planting to make up for tho ruthless destruction in the earlier days of the settlement of the country. After the address each child planted a tree and was especially urged to care for his own tree during his school life and after leaving, thus creating a pride in tho school. Afternoon tea was provided bv the wives of the committee men and lady friends of tho school. Mr Mudford was assured that tho Education Board’s suggestion that a plot be sot aside in tbo school' grounds as a native shrub nursery would be acted upon; tho committee were already at work in carrying out the suggestion. Mr Mudford remarked favourably on tlie school’s progress and congratulated the teacher and pupils on the very fine work being done, and urged a continuance on tho lines now in evidence. A very unfortunate happening occurred yesterday morning, when Mr Anderson’s fishing launch, which was rounding the north epit from the Rangitikci River to the sea, was struck by a very heavy wave, which dismantled tbo ship’s battery, tho launch was driven on to tho shore. Efforts were made at tho next tide to bring the" launch into deep water without avail.
