RANGITIKEI.
MARTON, Aug. 14. Messrs 1. B. Gibbs and J. Dallas, of Hunterville, have been accepted as recruits for the New Zealand Police Force. The departure of these two young men will be a loss to the district and particularly to the Huuterville Football Club, both having been prominent forwards in the senior fifteen for some years, and in the case of the hitter, in representative football. The local troop of the Manawatu Mounted. Rifles will be the poorer by the loss of Mr Gibbs, 'who held the rank of sergeant, and earned distinction by representing Ins regiment at . the Coronation-.
The death has occurred of Mrs Alin Batten (nee Mounsey), the wife of Major J. E. Batten, of Marion. She had resided in the Rangitikei district practically all her life arid for over forty years had resided at Marton, where* she reared a family of five daughters and one sou, Mr Mounsey Batten, civil engineer of the Public Works Department. Whangarei. The only single daughter is Miss Coralie Batten, dispensing chemist, at the Wanganui Hospital. In her earlier life Mrs Batten did her full share of social work when Major Batten was in command of the Royal Rangitikei Rifles, the pioneer volunteer force in the Dominion. She had been an active member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Marton, for many years.
