GAOL SENTENCE.

CHARGE OF STEALING PETROL. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL. Aug. 16. “An offence of this kind is difficult to detect,” said Detective-Sergeant R. Thompson, when William Joseph Lyons pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to the theft of 10 gallons of petrol valued at £l. Detective-Sergeant Thompsos said that accused had been caugf.t at 1.50 a.m. on Saturday syphoning petrol from a tank at tho rear of a motor truck. It was a rather mean type of theft. Accused ,was on sustenance. Accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
