WAITUNA WEST.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAITUNA WEST, Au S . 17.
Ideal weather conditions prevailed when the pupils of the school assembled for the Arbor Day observance. The children spent part of the morning at the bush, where they procured native shrubs and ferns for a fernery. Prior to the usual treo planting ceremony, the children were addressed by Mr E. Pearce, secretary of the School Committee. The planters were the senior boys attending the school. In the afternoon a Psoudopanax Crassifolium fiance wood) and a -Jeanne d’Arc lilac were planted. The August meeting of the Waituna West Women’s Institute was held in the ball, Mrs T. D. Stokes presiding over a very good attendance. A roll-call, “A household hint,” brought forth many useful hints. The competition for knitted garments brought a good display, which resulted : Mrs A. E. Shannon 1, Mrs Wevell 2, for fancy knitting, and Mrs Wevell 1 and Miss Guvleo 2, for plain knitting. The bring-and-buy stall did good business, everything being sold, the proceeds to bo donated to the federation. A demonstration was given by Mrs A. E. Shannon on crochet wool squares, also by Mrs T. D. Stokes on cellophane paper belts. The hostesses were Mrs Lucas and blisses Lucas, who served afternoon tea. Next month a demonstration will bo for wood fibre flowers; the competition will be a tinsel picture made from chocolate tinsel papers. Mrs A. E. Shannon and Mrs Jenkins were elected stewards for the potato-growing competition, and potatoes were given out- to members. A vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrators.
