AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Automobile As sociatio.ii was held last evening, Mr N. H. Mackie presiding. The report of the service officer (Mr H. It. D. Browne) stated that there had been no serious accidents in the territory. The demolition of the olcl Oroua bridge at Awahuri was nearly completed, and the necessary signs had been provided. The report continued: ‘On Saturday, July 24, I escorted the GovernorGeneral from AVhirokino to the Marton races and return. On the racecourse 1 assisted the Wanganui patrols in panting and service to members. On tlio occasion of the Manawatu v. Springboks match I was assisted in road patrolling both before and after the match by patrols from Levin, Vianganui, South Taranaki and Hawke s Lay Service was given to eight members. By request of the Wellington Automobile Association I travelled to Wellington to assist with traffic on August / and 14. Service was given to two members. I was also able to render first-aid treatment to persons slightly hurt in three accidents. I have given Safety First” lectures at four schools and have arranged to visit further schools after they resume from holidays. Ten new signs have been erected and-tour necessary replacements made, since tn last meeting I have enrolled 28 new members.” ~ Replying to representations for tne widening of th© bitumen surface ap the painting of white lines at the intersection of Rangitikei Line and the Kairanga-Bunnythorpe Road, the Bublie Works Department advised that their painters had now reached the intersection and were setting out centre lines. The corner was not an easy one on which to set out effective markings, and until the centre lines were completed the writer (Mr A. R. Acheson, assistant engineer) was not disposed to say that they would provide the best possible lay-out. Possible alterations would be studied before repainting was necessary, and in the meantime suggestions for improvements would be welcomed. The patrol gang had swept the whole intersection on numerous occasions without very lasting results. Traffic was continually dislodging more stones and throwing them on to the roadway. As far as Rangitikei Line was concerned, the board would consider priming this summer the shoulders approaching the intersection, anti it was suggested that the Kairanga County Council be approached for similar work on the Bunnythorpe-Kairanga Road for two chains on each side ot the highway. In respect of the association’s suggestion that the eastern corner be widened, this work could not be done at this time of the year, but •would be considered later. , Mr D. Coll is reported that the county council was co-operating with the main highways authorities. The need for a light at night on the Foxton-Levin roacl, where the new deviation leads off at Whirokino, was reported on by the service officer, who pointed out that, where the new road bore away from the road still in use, vehicles were liable to take the turn leading to the new road and sink into soft sand. —The tive decided to get in touch with the Public Works Department on the mat4er , , The attention of the City Council is to be drawn to the need for a caretaker at the . Esplanade motor camp during the winter.
