20 VILLAGES TAKEN
’PLANES HELP IN ATTACK,

The insurgents, supported by one hundred ’planes, broke through the defences of Santander at five points, when operations were suspended owing to a fog. More than 20 villages have been taken. The position is now favourable for a further advance.
Bloody hand-to-hand fighting with knives and bayonets occurred in some places. An official statement claims that 1500 prisoners were taken, including many officers. A Gibraltar message says that General Dcllano, broadcasting, said that the Almirante Cervera had sunk tlie Government destroyer Cliurruca in action off the north coast.

BOMBERS AS PROTECTION
TUNIS, Aug. 14
An unknown submarine tried to torpedo the French steamer Parame off Bizerta. The crews of French steamers at Tunis met and demanded protection.
The Daily Telegraph’s Paris correspondent says that two bombers from the Bizerta naval base are protecting French shipping in the western Mediterraneiin. !Each is armed with four double-firing machine-guns, capable of 1600 shots a minute, and four high explosive bombs. ' The thirty survivors of the Spanish Government tanker Campeador accuse Italian destroyers of sinking the vesThey state that 12 of the crew were trapped in the engine-room and burnt alive in blazing oil and that the Italian warship Saetta circled round tlie Campeador and was later joined by another. A destroyer not flying a flag followed and shelled the Campeador at nightfall and continued shelling as boats were lowered. , The Campeador is still burning, and a French naval cutter is guarding her. A Barcelona message states that insurgent bombers sank the Danish ship Edith 30 miles from Barcelona.
