FARMING NEWS.

RURAL RAKINGS. An unusual sight for this time of the year is a mob of something over 100 shorn sheep on a farm at Tokomaru. From a distanco they appear to be well-conditioned dry ewes. With the lambing season now well advanced in the Auckland province, sheep farmers in most districts report a particularly successful year. Losses were fairly heavy in early lambs, but more recent arrivals have thrived under temperate conditions, which have also greatly assisted the ewes. An outstanding feature in most areas is that the lambs are better conditioned and much more active than those born tinder more rigorous conditions a year ag While it is possible to speak favoui nhiv of all branches of the stock market it is the beef section that provides the sensational event, says a Waikato report. The improvement observed at Frankton a week ago naturally reflected itself m subsequent sales but the central entry on Tuesday which in the female section was short of requirements, obtained prices that were startling. Cows and heifers of good quality realised up to £l4 ss* which, even at a generous estimate e Qnnih weight, returns a value of Ss 6d Pei 1001b’. This is more above the peak of last winter s operations, which was reached at the end of September. No doubt higher levels will yet be attained, but the iesult seems more likely to be t tempting to market of heavier entries. At the same time it has to be admitted that saleyard supplies everywhere Ire noticeably diminishing and at some centres recently were so small as to be negligible. I
