POVERTY OF CLERGY.
COMPLAINT BY BISHOP. The Bishop of London, Dr. ’Winnington Ingram, speaking against “the poverty of the clergy” at the annual meeting of the Poor Clergy Relief Corporation, said that in London many efforts had been made to raise the incomes of clergymen to £3BO a year. “We are very much discouraged,” he continued. “The best brains among the young men are not being ordained. Young men go and get civilian posts. Unless we take the matter in hand we are going to lose the best brains of the country for the Church of England.
“I feel that the wives of the clergy become old before their time,” he added. “They have no servants. Why should we sit down under it? Why should one class of tbe community which is doing good work for the country live like this?”
