BIG RACE TO TONGALLA. AJAX IN FORM. MELBOURNE. Aug. 15. At the V.A.T.C. races on Saturday the following was tho. result, of the CHATSWOIITH PLATE, for thrcc-year-olds. One mile. —Ajax, 9.4 (Badger) 1; Avenger, 7.2 (Elliot) 2; llonsardian, 8.3 (Reed) 3. Eighteen started. Ajax went to the front after three furlongs and won convincingly by three-quarters of a length, with a length and a half between second and third. Time, 1.43<. AUSTRALIAN STEEPLECHASE. About three miles and a half. —Tongalla, 9.0 (Regan) 1; Montargis, 9.10 (Douglas) 2; Jehu, 10.7 (Carroll) 3. Seymour was scratched. Tongalla lost several lengths at the barrier, but half a mile from home was lying fourth to Dicac-um, Jehu and Montttrgis. Montargis was leader at tho three furlongs post, but after the last hurdlo Tongalla set out in , pursuit. He was only half a length behind Montargis entering the straight, and took charge over tho last furlong to win by five lengths. Jehu was four Jepgths away third. Time, 7.0 —a course .record.

MALAKOFF STAKES. Nino furlongs.— Tho Trump, 8.5 (Rccd) 1; Diaphnc, 7.9 (Eliott) 2; Turf Boy, 7.9 (Badger) 3. Eight started, including Golden Promise, who finished last. A length; a neck. Time, 1.511. Membo was unplaced in the Knowsley Steeplechase and Jack Horner and Riddle unplaced in the first and second divisions of the St. Aubin Welter respectively. MOOREFIELD RESULTS. SYDNEY, Aug. 15. At the Moorefield races the Kogarah Stakes, one mile, resulted: —Linldct, 8.7 (Glover) 1; Silver Cap, 8.0 (O’Sullivan) 2; Heroina, 8.9 (Wallace) 3. Eight started. A head; half a head. Time, 1.43. Aero King ran third to Welcome and Sturdcc in the Throe-Ycar-Old Handicap; Riposte was unplaced in tho Brush Hurthe race; Deputy Ruler, Retrieved and Stalin unplaced in the Flying Welter; King of Diamonds unplaced in the second division of the. same raco; and Maestro was unplaced in the Rockdale mile.
