OBITUARY
mu d. c. McCarthy. On Monday last the death occurred at Palmerston North of Mr Denis Collins McCarthy, a well-known resident of the Manawatu. The late Mr McCarthy came of distinguished Irish stock, being a son of the late Mr and Mrs John McCarthy, of Glaun. County Cork, Ireland, and a relative! (on his mother’s side) of the Irish patriot Michael Collins. Mr McCarthy came to New Zealand about 1883 and was engaged in farming in the Pohangina, Apiti and Bunnvthorpe districts, later removing to Palmerston North, where he held the position of Government land valuer for many years. His practical farming knowledge, his outstanding intellect and wide vision made him one of the Dominion’s leading valuers, and his knowledge of matters polit-'cal and of the district in which he lived and worked was surpassed l>v few. His work brought him into direct contact with the Maori race, for whom he had a orofound admiration, .and he was a keen student of the Maori language n.nd lore. His intimate friends will regret the passing of a most lovable character. He is survived by his wife, Mrs A. McCarthy, of this city, and a brother. Mr P. McCarthy, in the Old Country. . , , Itev. Father P. Herlihy officiated at the graveside when the remains were laid to rest in the Terrace End Cemeterv on Wednesday last, the pallbearers’ being Messrs T. CoughKn ings) .T. Macdona'd (Rnumai), U. Roberts (Dannevirke). nephew, F. Roberts and W. Howell (Pohangina) and i. O’Rourke (Otaki). '
