MINISTER’S PRAISE
4 KINDLY LONDON “BOBBY.”
The “decency” and kindliness of the London police were illustrated by the Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoarej in an address to the Prisoners’ Aid Society. He related how a constable at Coronation time had offered a stranded woman visitor, with two children, accommodation at his mother’s house. A ten-times convicted pickpocket was advised by tbe police to go straight. They subscribed and bought the pickpocket a barrow and two sacks of potatoes. He started business with these, the police patronising him and urging their friends to do likewise. The result was that the pickpocket established a flourishing enterprise and later entered the furniture trade. He prospered for 10 years, handed over the business to his brother, and retired.
