Mr Lloyd G. Harris, of Sanson, and Mr Richard V.. Pratt, of Apiti, are week-end visitors to Wellington for the Test match. Mr A. Boswortli, son of Major and Mrs J. T. Bosworth, of Palmerston North, is at present seriously ijl in a private hospital.
Sir Stenson Cooke, general secretary of the Automobile Association of Great Britain and a vice-president of the International Tourist Alliance, will arrive in New Zealand next March on a short visit.
Prior to his departure for the Gisborne branch, Mr C. P- Perry, of the local staff of the Bank of Australasia, was met by his fellow officers and presented with an eight-day dock as a small token of their esteem. Advice has been received that Very Rev. Monsignor MacManus, who left Palmerston North lor Ireland in March last, is at present in his home town, Carrigallen. County Leitrim. He will be returning to New Zealand in Novber.
Mr Arthur Henderson, the Labour M.P. and son of the former well-known Labour leader, is expected to arrive at Wellington from England on August 25, and during his stay in the Dominion will give several public addresses under the auspices of the Youth Peace Council. The enrolment of the undermentioned candidates in the civil reserve of pilots, and their training by their respective clubs has been approved by the Minister of Defence (Hon. FJones): —Marlborough Aero Club: L. M. G. McDonald, W. B. Parker, A. L. Ryan, B. C. Scott. Canterbury Aero Club: C. A. Burmister, C. N. Thornton. Auckland Aero Club: E. E. Crocker.
Mr John Edward Thwaites, for many years a teacher in the Wellington district, died at St. Albans, Christchurch, this week. Mr Thwaites taught at the Carterton, Masterton. and Clyde Quay Schools, and when he resigned in 1926, after 28 years’ service with the Wellington Education Board, he held the position of headmaster at the Island Bay School.- He then took up a teaching position at the St. Albans School.
An announcement that Acting-Petty Officer Thomas lan Harray, a New Zealand rating, had been selected for promotion to the rank of Sub-Lieuten-ant in the Royal Navy from September, was made by the Minister of Defence (Hon. F. Jones) last night, states a Wellington Press Association message. Mr Harray is a son of Mr John Harray, of Te Poi, Matamata, "Waikato, and was born on March 3, 1916. He entered the training ship Philomel on July 15, 1932, as a boy second class. He was given accelerated advancement to ordinary seaman on September 1, 1933. and to able seaman on December 1. 1934. Mr Harrav will join a rihmber of other acting-sub-lieutenants about his own age, who are to undergo courses for the rank of lieutenant at the Greenwich College and other naval schools.
