THE HARBOUR OF PAGO PAGO.—The house on the right is typical of those used by the Samoans all over the group. The interior is open to the air. Beyond is the harbour, which was originally an immense crater, the lip of which on the seaward side was either blown out by eruption or broken down by the pounding seas . The island of Tutuila is of volcanic origin and historically comparatively modern .
