HEALTH INSPECTION
IN HOROWHENUA COUNTY
DEPARTMENT’S ATTITUDE
Following a recent conference of local bodies in the Horowhenua district which share in the service and contribute to the salary ol the district health inspector, it was decided to point out to tho Health Department that it should become a contributor to the cost of the service. It was stated at the conference that the salary paid was innvequate and that local bodies could not further increase their contributions. The department had often made use of the service and the'native work throughout the area was much greater than in many health districts. The attitude of the department was disclosed in a letter read at yesterday’s meeting of the Horowhenua County Council, which stated that such a policy could not be embarked upon. “Concerning the work among Maoris,” stated the letter, “it is considered that the department is carrying a reasonable share of responsibility with the provision of nursing service and medical attention to indigent natives.” The Levin Borough Council wrote with reference to the same question, stating that it was imperative that some plan of action should be adopted, or the service of the inspector would bo lost to the district. “We have advised the department,” wrote the Mayor (Mr B. W. Goldsmith), “that its refusal would mean tho breaking up of the present - arrangement with local bodies.” , The county chairman (Cr G. AMonk), suggested that the matter be left in the hands of the Levin borough Council to ask the Government to appoint a~health officer in Palmerston North. “Tho department is certainly confusing two different aspects,” he added. “While the department assists in attending to the stick the health inspector’s primary duty is in. regard to sanitation and the prevention ot sickness, which is all important. Cr A. J. Gimblett agreed. “It the department will not co-operatc, k t it appoint its own inspector,” lie said. The suggestion was adopted.
