IRON AND STEEL .
OUTPUT AT HIGH LEVEL. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Aug. 11. Britain’s primary industries continue extremely active. Fresh evidence is provided by* the iron and steel output figures for July, issued by the British Iron and Steel Federation. These show that production of pigiron amounted to 729,300 tons, figures' not equalled since September, 1920, when 741,000 tons were produced. Last month’s total includes output of hematite, which shows a big increase owing to several furnaces heing transferred from the smelting of basic pig-iron. The monthly output of steel has continued at a figure considerably in excess of 1,000,000 tons the tonnage for last month being 1,058,200. This compared with 1,106.400 tons iv June and 974,100 tons for July, 1936. This high rate of activity has been attained despite an increase of Scottish holidays, which accounted for a reduction in the Scottish steel output of 53 000 tons.
