ASHHURST
(From Our Own UorresponJent.) ASHHURST, Aug. 12. The August monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was presided oyer by the president (Mrs B. Fairless). The attendance was very poor, and apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Jones, Templeton, J’aton, Williams, Middleton, Woodroofe, and Miss Irene Woodroofe. Mrs Groves was welcomed as a new member. Mrs Bowler-Watson, of Palmerston North, gave an interesting talk on china painting, with a very good display of her work. Mrs Flowers passed a vote of thanks to Mrs Watson. The flower competition (best grown in the garden) was won by Mrs Williams with Mrs Curtis second. The motto for fho month is, “What I keep I loose and what I give away I have.’’ The competition at next meeting will be for both sections a bowl of spring flowers. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Murphy, Morris, and Kerrigan.. An interesting game of football was played on the local school ground between the Ashhurst and Whakarongo School teams. 4 Ashhurst scored five trios (15 points) and Whakarongo nil. K. W alton scored three tries, J. Walker one and R. Trcmewan one. Mr W. Brewer refereed the game. L: Wood, of \\ hakarongo, spoke on behalf of his team, and Koyce Drummond for the Ashhurst team. Basketball was played between the Ashhurst and Whakarongo girls’ teams, Ashhuret proving the winners, gaining 18 points while Whakarongo made- 3 points. The young ladies very ably thanked those responsible for the enjoyable time spent through Miss. May Johansen, of Whakarongo, and' Mies Lota Story replied. Afternoon tea was served by the'ladies committee.
Recently, the meeting of the Ashhurst Public Cemetery and Domain Board was held in the Public Library. Those present wero Mr P. Wilkin (in the chair), Messrs W. Maunder, 11. Bristow, J. McDonnol, and W. N. Brewer. Cemetery accounts amounting to £l4 5s 6d were passed for payment. Maerocarpa trees arc to bo planted to fill the gaps in the present hedge, and the outbuildings removed to a more suitable position. Domain accounts wero passed for payment amounting to £7 12s 6d. During the quarter a concrete race has been put down at the cow shed. The blackberry growth is bad on the terrace, and the caretaker has been instructed to cut this down, also the lupin is to be dealt with in a similar way. The Domain has again been visited by poachers for opossums and proceedings are to bo taken against any person so doing on the Domain property. The Town Hall was a scene of gaiety on Wednesday evening when the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club held its annual dance arid presentation of trophies. The hall, which was decorated with coloured paper streamers and small replicas of targets wero used on the range, bore a festive appearance. The stage was decorated with flags, crossed rifles, greenery, and hydrangeas. A display of trophies won by the various members during the season added to the already gay effect. The president of the club (Mr W T . G. Romley) expressed appreciation to the patron (Mr A. W. Akers) for allowing the use of the range and also to the committee and those who had taken part in making the evening a success. Apologies for absence were received from Mr Barlow (president of the Linton Defence Rifle Club), Mr J. McDonell and Vlr VV. R. Kells. Mr Rom'ey expressed i hanks for the able services of the club’s secretary (Mr It. A. Jones). The trophies wore then presented as follow:—Club championship, S. J. Brookie (cup); handicap, W. N. N'ickolls; A grade championship (miniature cup), T. Orr; R. A. Jones trouhv (300vds handicap). F. Bassett; Air Al. Baton’s trophy (200, 300 and 500yds^ser\ice handicap). J. Hargreaves; Mr C. The programme consisted of both modern and oldtime dances, the music being provided by a professional orchestra. Novelty dances were won as follow:- Alonte Carlo, Air R. Rom lev and Airs T. Orr; lucky Gav Gordons, Miss Hartstonc and Mr W. N. Brewer' target dance, Mrs R. A. Jones and Mr E. McCrea. The duties of AI.C. were carried out by Air F. Dunstall and Mr II Bristow.
