HURDLES TO COTTINGHAM. NOCTURNUS WINS AGAIN. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 12. The C.J.C. Grand National meeting was continued at Riccarton to-day in fino weather. The principal event, the Grand National Hurdles race, was won practically all tho way by tho local horse Cottingham, the big jumping double thus going to Riccarton stables. Tho North Island filled the minor places with Clarion Call and Brigadoro, both trained at Marton. Clarion Call thus repeated‘his performance of last year, when he ran second to Jolly Beggar.. The Beaufort Steeplechase was won by tho National victor, Nocturnus, after another good display of jumping, and the Islington and August Handicaps were won respectively by Arctio King and Alma. W. Cooper, rider of Joy Boa in tho Spreydon Hurdles, was suspended for the remainder of tho meeting for careless riding. Tho fall of Palmyra in the Woolston Handicap was found to be accidental. Tho totalisator again showed an increase, tho £48,732 put through being £8922 10s ahead of tho second day last year. Results: HUNT CUP, of £275. About two miles and a half. 1-2 TANGLED. 10.10 (W. J. Also started: 2-3 Arctic Star 10.8, 7-7 Lycidas 9.0 (fell), 6-5 Nightwind car. 9.9-jr (fell), 5-6 Scotsdcn car. 9.2 i (ran off), 8-8 Macalpein car. 9.82 (fell). A length; four lengths. Time, 5.17. Tangled won comfortably. Kelly tho Crow improved and_ gave him a good raeo over the last circuit, but was_ tiring at the last fence, which Tangled jumped well clear. Ho was casing up to win at the finish from Sunward, who heat the tiring Kelly the Crow comfortably for second. Arctic Star was a long way back fourth. Night-win, Lycidas and Macalpein fell, and Scotsdcn ran off.
SUMNER HANDICAP, of £275. Nino furlongs.

A length; a head. Maroha was fourth. Time, 1.56 1-5. The Hunt club winner Cape Gabo was always fairly well placed, and after Grampian. Sir Hugh, Petersham and Roy Bun had led to the straight, Petersham came on to be challenged by Cape Gabo. Tho latter soon had charge and ran on for a comfortable win. Myriam came with a good run to snatch second place off Petersham on the post. ..Maroha was fourth, followed by Roy Bun, Chidden, The Sandwich Man, Miracle, ‘and Lustre.
BEAUFORT STEEPLECHASE, of £550. About two miles and a half.

Also started: 2-3 Cock o’ the North 9.10 (lost rider), 3-2 Shillelagh Wood 9.7 (fell), 6-6 Pahu 9-2 (baulked). Twelve lengths; four lengths. Only the placed horses finished. Time, 5.16 2-5. Nncturnus went to the front from the oecoiid last fence, but at tho last ho had a distinct “life,” appearing to slip on Inking off. However, he recovered quickly and cleverly, and won very easily from Forest Glow and Royal Limond, both of whom tired over the last bit after forcing the pace out in front. Forest Glow, however, jumped well, and thoroughly deserved his expenses for tho trip. Beale had a hard job with Royal Limond, but by running up on tho outside of horses at his fences lie kept him on tho course. These three were the only runners to finish. Shillelagh Wood went at the first of the Kennels double, the second fence, and Cock o’ the North hit hard at tho fifth, dislodging his rider, while Palm refused to complete the cou rue.

Backers of tho hot favourite Palmyra met disaster early, a 6 she fell in the first couple of furlongs. She had drawn No. 1 at the start, but began slowly and was several places back when she came down. The fall caused interference in tho big field, leaving tho runners spread over a big space on the turn, whore Alishna, Mittio, Wine Card, Colombo, and Waitaka were the most prominent. Mishna led into line from Colombo, Wine Card, and Mittio. Mittie tackled Mishna at the distance, and drew out a little for an apparently comfortable win, but Mishna came again and finally Mary Pratt on the inner joined in. Mittio ran in under pressure, but straightened up and held on long enough for a narrow win. Mary Pratt just failing to got Mishna. Wino Card was fourth and then Yalantua, Colombo, Liane and Waitaka. A head; four lengths. Journet was fourth. Time, 4.51 2-5. Except that Clarion Call led him over tho first hurdle, Cottingham led all the way to win tho Grand National Hurdle Race, though ho only just withstood a strong challenge at the finish to boat Clarion Call by a head. Cottingham opened up a big early gap on his field, being followed by Clarion Call, John Charles. Brigadore and Jolly Beggar, tho rest being fairly well back. The lending order was unchanged until tho last nino furlongs, when Jolly Beggar began to drift and, getting into tho fence by the mile post, ho never afterward threatened any danger. Cottingham led Clarion Call, Brigadore, John Charles, and Journet out of tho back, and at, the last fence Cottingham was just ahead of Clarion Call, Brigadore, Journet and John Charles, Clarion Call made a great effort on the fiat, but just failed to got tho winner. . Brigadore outstayed Journet for third, then High Quality. John Charles, Jolly Beggar. Blue Tiger, Irish Comet and Ethiop. Master Musk foil about six furlongs from home. SPREYDON HURDLES, of £3OO. One mile and three-quarters. 2-1 REDOLENT, 10.11 (J. Murfitt) ... 1 5-6 FIREGUARD, ear. 9.4? (R. Beale) 2 7-7 ROYAL PAL, car. 9.4| (W. Redolent, improved by his race the first day, won in solid fashion at the finish. Ho took charge off the pacemaker, Golden Lap, a, mile from home and fought off a hot challenge from the last fence home by Fireguard, who showed considerable improvement on his first day’s running. Royal Pal was always handy to run third, with Sunny Comet, Golden Lap and Monastic tho best of the others. ISLINGTON HANDICAP; of £4OO. One . . mile and a quarter.’ 5- ARCTIC ICING, 9.4 (S. Half a length each way. Monipere was fourth. Time, 2.8. The Trcntham pair, Arctic King ana Boomerang, came solidly at the finish to fill first and second places in the Islington Handicap. Neithor woro prominent early, but Arctic King had moved up handy on the turn, Monipere having led all tho way from Silver Sight, _ Last Refrain, Shy and Tiger Gain, with Ponty on tho rails next. Tonty jiulled to the outer approaching the straight, where Monipere led from Shy, Last Refrain, Ponty, Arctic King and Queen Dorothy. Tho last-named got. through on the inner, but Arctic King, further out, gradually drew ahead and put tlio issue beyond doubt. Boomerang came very fast over tho last furlong and cut out Queen Dorothy for second. Monipere was fourth, then Ponty, Amelita, Tiger Gain, Sir Nigel and Silent. Knight. AUGUST HANDICAP, of £350. Seven furlongs. 5-4 ALMA, 8.11 (A. E. Didham) 1 2-2 CATALOGUE, 9.11 , , „ (W. J. Broughton) 2 7- SILVER STREAK, 9.4 (R. J. Mackie) 3 Also started: 13-10 Greek Shepherd 10.0, I- Trench Fight 9.5,. 3-3 Bay Duko 8.11, II- Knockfin 8.9, 12-10 Rebel Chief 8.4, 4- Araboa 8.3, 9-8 Greek Gold 8.3, 15-15 Courtyard 8.0, 8-7 Fiord 8.0, 14-14 Top Rank 8.0, 12-13 Golden Dart 8.0. A length; half a length. _ Trench Fight was fourth. Time, 1.27 4-5. The first day’s winner Alma scored a brilliant win again in the Atagust Handicap, having too much pace for a host of opponents in tho straight.. Knockfin made tlio pace with Trench Fight, Bay Duke, Grey Honour, Rebel Chief and Alma most prominent, others in the picture being Greek Gold and Fiord. There was a rush for position at the false rail, where Alma slipped through and, finishing with a rare burst of speed, hung on to win handily from Catalogue,. who came very solidly at tho end. Silver Streak was overhauled by Catalogue in the last few strides. Silver Streak had come, from the rear of the field and was weakening again at tho end. Trench Fight was fourth, also fading a little at the finish, and then came a big bunch in which Golden Dart, Grey Honour, Rebel Chief, Crook Gold, Fiord, and Bay Duke were prominent.
