IMPRISONED DRIVER.
WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 12. In tlie Supreme Court to-day before Mr Justice Kennedy, Mr Gordon J. Reed applied for a writ of habeas corpus for the release of Eric Clarence Taylor, garage proprietor, of Invercargill, who on Wednesday was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., on a charge of negligent driving and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Counsel claimed that prisoner had been wrongfully convicted. The motion was mentioned this afternoon when fixtures were being arranged, and His Honour said that on such an application counsel was entitled to be heard in priority to all other business. Mr Reed said he had just lodged the application and was not yet ready to argue the matter. The Crown had not yet been served. His Honour suggested that counsel move for a rule nisi during the afternoon, and at a later stage His Honour granted a rule nisi in Chambers and arranged to hear the substantive application on Monday morning.
