The friends of Mr F. Cosford will be pleased to learn that he is showing an improvement after his recent operation. Mr U. J. Smith presided over a meet Ing of the Bush Rugby Union last evening. It was resolved to accept. August 21 for a- junior game against Wairarapa. It was decided to offer the Horowheilua Union August 21 for the Bush team’s visit to Levin. The Ilukanui Club were formally declared winners of the junior championship and the date of tile Cowan Cup final was held over. Mangalainoka seniors wore declared winners of the Cowan Cup and the Mangataino' a ibirds winners of the third grade contest. The Kelly Cup will be decided between Ekctahuna Old Boys thirds and Mangalainoka. The Wairarapa secretary was communicated with by telephone and August 28 was tentatively accepted for a return match against, . the Wairarapa senior team. Tt was mentioned that J. Sadler, of Wellington, had been discharged from hospital and if was decided to write him a letter extending best wishes for a complete recovery. Mr Jensen was in the chair at last evening’s mooting of the Paliiatun Boxing Club. The secretary (Mr O. Hill) reported a debit, balance of some £l7 or £lB. 'flic meeting had been called for the purpose of electing a now secretary and after considerable discussion Air Carbines was appointed. A meeting called by the T’nhiatua brnnell of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union passed a resolution favouring a continuance of the embargo on the importation of livestock into New Zealand. Mr J. 11. Brenmer, who presided, pointed out that the Government required a lead in the matter and had approached tho Farmers’ Union. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Air J. Algio who, it was stated by tho chairman, had been one of the most loyal members of tho executive. Tho Minister of Defence intimated in a letter that it was still not tho policy of the department to provide furniture in the drill hall nnd suggested that tho hall be leased by the union at a nominal rental of £lO per annum, which would permit of flic hall being furnished as was desired. The chairman pointed out that the union was not n city organisation and. therefore, could not ent.ortain the pro position. It. was decided to ask the borough council to consider the proposition as put by the Minister of Defence. Cr A. W. Bisset presided over a meet-

ing of tho Pabiatua County Council yesterday. The Mangatuinoka Co-oporntiva Dairy Co., Ltd., referred to the unsatisfactory state of tho pound corner which is impassable during flood time. It was left to next, year’s estimates. Tho Audit Department advised that they knew of no authority enabling tho council to place loan moneys on deposit oilier than at the hank under the terms of tile Ixical Bodies Loans Act, this being in reference to tho bridge loan of £3400.. Referred to the county clerk. Some time ago the Palliatua County Council made application to the Highways Board for assistance in widening and improving the Alakuri Gorge section of the Pahiatna-Pongarna main highway and the latter advised tho council that thoy were prepared to do tins on condition that the council contributed £2OOO toward this work. The district engineer of the Public Works Department in reference to the Marinin Bridge proposals stated that the department was not pro pared to utilise tho grant voted on the estimates (£700) for flic purpose of a temporary bridge, being of tho opinion that a desion should now ho arrived at concerning any rearrangement- necessary when the new bridge is built. The consulting engineer will discuss the position with the engineers at the site.

A rebate of 3 per cent is to be made on general rates if _paid before tho due time.
