PIGEONS POISONED.
NEW YORK WOMAN’S ACT. NEW YORK, Aug. 10. A gruesome massacre of scores of city pigeons was perpetrated in peaceful Verdi Square in the heart of Manhattan by an elderly woman. . Accompanied by a small dog, the piosoner entered the square during the morning, scattered seed and hrirried away. The pigeons became distressed within a few minutes after eating the seed and desperately flew to puddles seeking water. Presently they began”dying in mid-flight, their bodies hurtling to earth, where they were scattered by the impact, blood flecking the plots of grass and also the statue of the composer Verdi. It was discovered that the seed was impregnated with strychnine calculated to dry the moisture from the body quickly, after which drinking is immediately fatal. Protests are pouring in from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The police are seeking the poisoner. It is estimated that more than 300 pigeons were killed.
