JOHNSONVILLE SALE. SIIEEP PRICES HOLD. WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. A largo yarding of cattle and sheep was otlered at the Johnsonvillc stock sale yesterday, but neither cattle nor shep were up to the usual quality. This was more noticeable in the ox section. The yarding of bullocks consisted of chiefly mediumweight cattle, with only a few pens of heavy sorts. Fine quality bullocks met with a ready sale at prices firm on last week, but unfinished cattle were hard to sell, even at reduced limits. With the exception of one truck of extra prime heavycows, the yarding ttf cows ami heifers was of indifferent quality station cows and cows cx-dairy. Prime cows and heifers met with spirited competition with no alteration, and. taking into account the finality, the balance of the female yarding sold at prices quite up to those ruling last week. Only a few small calves came forward, these selling readily. Tile wethers yarded were not up lo the usual quality, but prime heavy sheep sold at late rates and light to medium-weights were firm to Is a head. Only a few pons of extra heavy ewes came forward, the balance of the yarding consisting of light to medium-weight and unfinished sheep. All classes met with good competition at prices showing a firming tendency to the extent of Is a head. A small yarding of good quality lambs sold without 'alteration. LEVIN. Aug. 11. Firm prices were realised in all sections
at the Levin stock sale. Pigs and sheep sold briskly, and fat cattle improved gn late rates. Spinging heifers showed an appreciable rise. Realisations were ns follow; —
Pigs.—Light porkers, 28s 6d to 365; heavy, 37s 6d to £2 13s; choppers, 395; slips, 13s 6d to 23s 6d; stores, 19s 6d to 345. Sheep: Fat ewes, 37s 6d; fat hoggets, 23s 6d to 375; fat wethers. 36s 9d; store ewes, 19s; ewe hoggets. 21s 7d to 345; owe lambs, 24s lOd. Cattle: Light fat cows. £3 5s to £3 13s 6d; medium, £4 to £4 10s; heavy, £4 15s to £5 .ss; store cows, £1 10s to £3; vealers, £2 13s lo £3 10s; maiden heifers, £3 7s 6d to £4 15s. At the Pahiatua salo a small offering of sheep and a large entry of dairy cows were submitted. Sheep sold readily at full late rates, hut bidding on the dairy stock was somewhat, restrained.
1 Selected Jersey cows, close to profit, : made £5 to £6 15s, and backward sorts ■ from £4 to £5. Two-year in-calf heifers made £4 10s and £5. Best S. 11. cows (early ealvers) made £6 10s and Jersey sorts £6 10s and £7: good early ealvers, £6 to £6 15s. Medium wether hoggets realised 19s Id; forward-conditioned b.f. hoggets, 22s 7d. HASTINGS, Aug. 11. ■ A small yarding of fat cattle at the Stortford Lodge stock sale 10-day met an easier market, prices bring fully 10s a head down from last week. The pens contained almost entirely female sorts, best cows making £9 lCr, medium £7 10s to £8 10s, and light £5 10s to £6 10s. Best heifers made £8 10s lo £9 10s, hut few peris were offered. Store sheep again sold well, laic values being fully maintained. Bcvt weolly Corricdalc cross ewe hoggets mafic 32u 7*l. best woolly wether hoggets 24r, 2d. and fat and forward black-fared hoggets 23s lOd. Small-grown light-condition sorts made dear buying. Very few breeding ewes were offered. Good four-year owes, depastured with Southdown rams, made 34s 3d. and sound-mouth fivo-voar ewes, heavy in lamb, 27s 7d. No wethers were offered.. Fat sheep values showed a rsc, fresh record price levels being established for the season. Extra prime wethers sold at 465; heavy prime ewes, 37s 6d; prime Down cross owes, 355; Southdown owes, 3?s 6d; etxra prime Down cross hoggets, 30s. medium 255. light 20s 6d to 235. All lines met with keen bidding. WESTFIELD VALUES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 11. Exporters having bought most of the best cattle during the past month and left Auckland butchers short of beef, values made a sensational rise of 4s a hundred pounds at the Westfield sale to-day. Similar values have not been quoted since November, 1930. Individual prices firmed from £1 5s to £1 153 a head. . Extra choice ox sold at 38s a 1001 b; choice and prime, 34s to 375; unfinished, 29s to 33a; prime cow and heifer beef, »30s to 345; unfinished, 22s to 295; extra heavy steers, £ls 15s to £l7; heavy £l4 5s to £ls 17s 6d, medium £l3 to £l4 15s, light £lO to £l2 10s, unfinished £8 to £lO ss; extra heavy cows and heifers.. £ll 5s to £l4, heavy £9 to £ll 15s, medium £7 12s 6d to £9 17s 6d, light £5 10s to £8 10s, unfinished £3 10s to £7 ss. - Further advances were quoted in all classes of sheep, short entries being general and quality fair. Lambs were particularly dear, and made the best prices of the season.
