MYRIAM MAKES GOOD.
BRED FOR STAMINA. WIN AT RICCARTON. (By “Spectator.”) Myrjam, who stalled off a strong challenge to win tho Avonhead Handicap on tho first day at Riccarton and pay a win dividend approaching half a century, was second to Cbrroboree in the North Island Hack Plato at the Manawatu autumn meeting, but subsequently ran unplaced at the Wanganui winter races. She had been placod earlier over nine furlongs at Riccarton, but is not a quick beginner. By Lord Warden—Alyson, she ..was bred in Marlborough by Mr J. J. Corry, and won her first race at Waterloa in tho May meeting of last year. Her dam, Alyson, was got by Kilbronoy from Rebekah, the Bezonian mare who produced, among others, Rachel, the dam of Rabbi. Myrjam’s form prior to her success had not quite come up to expectations, but on breeding, sho should lack nothing in stamina.
Miracle Promising. Miracle, who finished strongly into second place in the Avonhead Handicap, is an improving young four-year-old by Siegfried from Polly Peachem who, in addition to being a half-sister to Runnymede, Raasay, My Own, and Simba, has produced winners in Jenny Diver and Mclleath. Miracle twice filled second places to Dictate at Riccarton and Washdyke earlier in the season, and looks like developing into a good galloper. Takanini’s Chief Winners,
The principal winner at Takanini during the past season was Gay Talkie, who won £1665 before being sold at a high price for export to India. The Melbourne Cup candidate Flood Tide also had a good year with winnings amounting to £1375. An interesting feature of Flood Tide’s performances was that he earned no place-money, as he eithor won or ran nowhere. A good deal has been written about the son of Tidal, but there is no doubt that he is a fine performer and lus appearance suggests that he is likely to on joy further success this season. Flood Tide is to go direct to Melbourne when he makes his trip to Australia. Sired By Stork. White Heron and Lady Jim, two Taranaki hunters, were both sired by the Mitchelson, Taranaki, and Stratford Cup winner, Stork. Riccarton Trainer’s Intentions. The Riccarton trainer F. D. Jones, who has a team of nine horses in work, does not intend visiting Australia this year. If is likely that he will go north with several horses for the spring fixtures in Auckland. Ten In Work. There are at presont ten two-year-olds in work on the Takanini tracks. Collision Breaks Down. Looking a winner in tho Hunters’ Flat race at Riccarton on. the first day, until he broke down in the last 100 yards, Collision was well down on his pastern when he returned, and it looks as. if lie will bo off the scene for some time. Collision had appeared to bo a good prospect for the Grand National Hurdles. Burglar also broke down badly in the big steeplechase. Trial Over Mile. Courtcraft and Francis Drake were associated at Wanganui on Saturday in a gallop over a mile which they cut out in 1.48 a good gallop in the conditions. Neither colt was ridden out, and both had a fair amount in reserve. Mr W. 11. Gaisford had every reason to be pleased with tho way Courtcraft shaped, and will doubtless be encouraged to send him ovcg for the A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies and the Melbourne Cup. If ho is taken over Courtcraft may bo given a run in the Rosehill Guineas prior to the Derby at Randwick. The Woodville trainer, F. Davis, will probably leave for Australia at the end of the month with Courtcraft, Francis Drake, Aiwai, and Homily. Lynch Law. J. T. Jamioson is boginning to send his brilliant colt Lynch Law along at a faster rate at Randwick, and the chestnut is shaping as if the lameness, which caused his temporary retirement last autumn, has .been overcome. Accompanied by Birthday Boy, Lynch Law was not urged along over the last half furlong of a recent four furlongs trial, run in 53sec. Earnings Of Team. I J . E. Pope was the most successful trainer at Takanini last season in point of numbers, having saddled up 13 winners. The loss of Queen Nona, after winning twice early in the season, was unfortunate, as sho was shaping well. The earnings of Pope’s team amounted to £2442, which works out at an average of £305 per horse, a good record considering that soveral of them did little racing. Coming From India.
The well-known Auckland trainer and hurdle horseman I. Tucker, who took Gay Talkie to India a couple of months ago, is returning to New Zealand shortly, having loft Bombay on July 15. In a letter received in Auckland Tucker stated ho was offerod a rotainer to ride in jumping races in India, but lie did not accept it. Returned to Trentham.
Rod Sun, who has been suffering -from a bruised joint since arriving at Riccarton, dii not show any signs of overcoming the trouble, and ho was shipped back to Trenthem,
