FOXTON.

(From Our Own Corresponded.) FOXTON. Aug. 9. Mr and Mrs K. BotnrofT arid family are leaving Foxton to take up their residence in Palmerston North. Mrs A. WattBrown, who has lieen on a visit to Foxton, has returned to Wanganui. A hearty welcome was extended to Mr A. N. Smith at the annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club by the chairman (Mr R. Bryant). Mr Smith is an ex-steward of tho club. The twontv-first anniversary of tho formation of the Foxton branch of the R.S.A. and the annual reunion wore held on Saturday evening. Mr D. Brooks (pre sklent) presided and there was a largo attendance. The toast of “Kindred. Units” was proposed by Captain J. R. Middleton, R.N., D. 5.0., and replied to by Messrs R. Byne (Imperial Army). Thompson (heavy artillery), 11. V. Bond (infantry), Thomson. of Palmerston North (Seaforth Highlanders), and D. Brooks (Australian Forces). Tho toast of “Parliament” was proposed by Mr W. Young. Mr C. L. Hunter, M.P., replied. Ho Faid : “New Zealand is so situated that it does not require a land army, and tho Government is therefore transferring its attention to building up an up-to-date air force. Battleships are only toys when it comes to defending this country. An air force is tho only thing that can do that, and I am pleased to say that at Oliakea, a few miles north of Foxton, one of the biggest defence aerodromes of tho Dominion is to-day in the course of construction. Tho Ohakea ’drome will be one of the main training centres for pilots for tho defence of New Zealand.” The toast of “Absent Comrades” was proposed by Mr M. B. Borgin, and of "The Visitors” by Mr J. S. Shorthousc. The annual conference of the New Zealand Aijto-Cycle Union was held in Foxton at the request of tho Foxton United Sports Association. The visitors were welcomed by Mr S. R. Amlin (president) and their deliberations extended well into tho night. Mr W. M. Thomas was the local ■ delegato with Mr Austin!
