WINTER CUP WINNER

CATALOGUE SCORES WELL. BOLD AWAPUNI GALLOPER. (By “Spectator.”) Winner of the Winter Cup at Riccarton yesterday from end to end, the Lord Quex—Oatalani geldl'ng Catalogue, who is trained at Awapuni by Mrs A. W. Me Donald, showed what ho is capablo of when he brought off a similar surprise at the Manawalu winter meeting. He has been very unlucky at times this season, but lias boon a most consistent stake earner sinco his acquisition by the Palmerston North sportsman, Mr E. L. Barnes, some ton months ago. Placed in work iast September after a very long spell, lie ran second in his first outing at Woodville, and went on to secure a first and second at the Wellington meeting, where he showed his class by beating some strong fields.

Next produced at Feilding, this bold galloxier won tho Oroua Hack Cup and was second in the _ Onepuhi Hack Handicap. Conceding Wild Chase 101 b, lie rail the brilliant Paper Money cojt to 1(1 lengths in the Awapuni Gold Cup at the Manawatu autumn meeting, and, in his next outing at Hawke’s Bay, had a bad run tho first day, but finished second to Padishah in the Coronation Cup.

Catalogue’s most recent success prior to the Winter Cup was at the Manawatu winter meting when, returning lo racing after a brief spell, he bolted home five lengths in front of a strong field in the seven-furlong Mcßae Handicap. Taken to Trentham, he ran fourth in the Whyto Memorial (one mile) and did not start again at the Wellington meeting. Ho had to receive veterinary attention, but. soon recovered, and started in the open six furlongs at Marton, but did not do justice to himself. Catalogue has raced with success over all distances from six furlongs to li miles, and as he was not harshly handicapped with 8.13 in the mile event at Riccarton, his win came as no surprise to a few. “Spectator” made the prediction three weeks ago that he would be found playing a prominent part at the .finish.

Steeples Winner. Nocturnus, who won the Grand National Steeplechase yesterday, had performed well over cross-country in the south during the last few months, winning over two miles at Riverton, whilo lie was placed in two other events at the same fixture. Ho won tho Clnremore Hack Steeplechase, about two miles, with 9.13, at South Canterbury in May, beating Polydora, Burglar, Streamline ana others, and on the next day Hunting Go beat him by half a length in tho Pareora Steeplechase, in which lie carried 9.5. Santoft, who had a similar impost, being third. At Dunedin Nocturnus won the Otago Steeplechase, two miles and a half, with 10.0, while at his last start at the same' meeting Trisox beat him in tho Wingatui Steeplechase, in which he had 11.0, Santoft (10.0) being third, fifteen lengths away. Nocturnus was just too lato with his run to catch Cock o’ the North in tho finish of the Ilomoby Steeplechase at the recent Christchurch Hunt meeting. Cock o’ the North. Cock o’ the North, who led for a long way in the Grand National Steeplechase before he fell, was well enough bred to win the big event. His sire, Royal Mac, was a briliant galloper able to win up to a mile and a-quarter. He was by the Wallace horse Mountain King, winner of the V.R.C. and A.J.C. Derbies, and the Victorian St. Leger. Wallace was the best Australian son of Carbine. Royal Mac’s dam Flora Macdonald (Dunedin Cup winner) was by Boniform from Lady Lochiel. Cock o’ the North’s dam, Dabchick, was sired by Formosan (St. Leger —Forme), brother of the wonder marc Cruciform, from Aquatis, who traced back to Tradueer.

Confidence Justified. Shillelagh Wood, who finished second in the Grand National Steeplechase, justified the confidence of his connections in starting him in the big cross-country event instead of the Enfield Steeplechase. He won the Christchurch Hunt Club Steeplechase recently, and was well up in the front all tho way yesterday. Jolly Beggar’s Win. Jolly Boggar, whose win in tho Jumpers’ Flat at Riccarton yesterday showed him to be well tuned up, will now come

into increasing favour as a prospective winner of his third Grand National Hurdles. He is a brown gelding by Nigger Minstrel from the Glenapp—Red Cross niaxe Glencross, a full-sister to tho 1917 Auckland Cup winner Fiery Cross, and is nine years old. Bred and owned by Mr D. H. Roberts, of Greymouth, and trained by F. Christmas at, Riccarton, he began racing with a single 6tart as a three-year-old, but was not seriously trained till ho was five. His record now comprises 40 starts for ten wins and £2439 in stakes. If it had not been for his win in tho Greymouth Cup at the New Year twelve months "ago, all his successes would have been over hurdles until yesterday. Ho has won the Grand National Hurdles the last two years, and his other wins include tho A.R.C. Campbell Hurdles, To Kuiti Hurdles and tho Christchurch Hunt Longbeach Hurdles. He had been off the winner’s list sinco th© last Grand National, but recently he was twice third at Ellerslie. Solwit Makes Good.

Solwit made his reappearance over tho fences to win the Trial Hurdles yesterday. He had a race at the Ashburton meeting in June, and has got through a lot of work since without any apparent . recurrence of his old leg trouble. Solwit, who is one of tho few Solferino’s progeny still racing, is a faultless jumper.
