WHALING ACTIVITY.

SWEDISH SHIP FOR ANTARCTIC. The large Swedish floating whale oil refinery, Ulysses, on Julie 19 passed Gibraltar oil the way from her home pol't, Gothenburg, for Antarctic whaling grounds. The coming whaling season in waters south of New Zealand promises to be a period of unprecedented competition. A feature will be the scale of Japanese activity. Two years ago Japan entered the whaling industry with one factory ship, the Tolla.ll Alarm Last year this vessel was joined hy the Japanese-built Nisshin Alarm one of the largest vessels of its kind afloat. This year will probably see six Japanese floating factories and flotillas of chasers. There will also prol>ablv be a South African factory ship and its chasers in action, signifying this country’s entry into the industry. Practically every European country will have a. number of vessels in operation, the Scandinavian contingent being exceptionally strong.
