BRITAIN’S DEFENCES

A DETERRENT TO WAR. EFFICIENCY PRAISED. SAFETY OF THE NAVY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received August 10, 11.40 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 9. “The equipment of the defences services and the organisation for producing armaments are so Highly efficient to-day that it most unlikely that any country would consider a war against Britain,” said the Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare) at Norwich. He added: “It is likely that the battleship will not be considered a worth while target lrom the air in the future. A massed attack on it would probably result in at least ten enemy aircraft being brought down.”
