HARRIERS.
WIN FOR C. McVICAR. The Y.M.C.A. Harriers’ Club Held road race from Ashhurst to Mr W. K. Woodd’s residence, Whakarongo, a distance of approximatly six miles, on Saturday afternoon. There were 18 starters. A strong south-westerly wind blowing into the runners’ faces and the hard road added to the discomforts. C. McVicar (4min.), who is much better road runner, ran far in excess of all previous form and gradually overtook the 13 earlier starters to win from A. Langley by 10 yards after a fast finish. Langley and R. Moore, who finished third, ran with McVicar for about the last three miles and were only, beaten over the last 100 yards. C. Weller was again in great form, covering the distance in 30min. 29sec., and finishing just over one hundred yards behind the winner. N. Hearsey, fifth to finish, also ran well to gain second fastest time in 33 min. 23sec. McVicar secured third fastest time. The next seven runners finished in two bunches very close behind Hearsey. The following are the placings of the first ten to finish (the times for the first 5 are given):— C. McVicar (4min.), 34min. 4sec., 1; A. Langley (6J-min.). 36min. 40sec., 2; R. Moor (OJmin..), 36min. 42sec.. 3; C. Weller (scr.), 30min. 29sec., 4; N. Hearsev (2Tmin.), 33min. 23eec., 5; J. Woodd (4min.), 6; F. Lee (9min.). 7; A. Newlands (4|min-\ 8; I. Ranfo’rd (51min.), 9; S. Oxenbam (33min.) 10. Sixteen of the eighteen starters finished the course.
