(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Aug. 6. The military ball held at' the Railway Thoaire proved most enjoyable. Air J. Miller was the M.C. Mr G. Gordon was unfortunate on Mori day at Te floro to fall from his eyrie and injure two ribs. Mr anti Ms P. Ferguson arid Mr and Mrs S. Whiteman left fot the south to-day. Mr W. Coulter, who several weeks ago met with a painful mishap, is still incapacitated. Another of the district’s oldest identities passed awn.v yesterday morning in the person of Mrs Fred Barrett. Deecascd, who was well known in the- Horowliemia district was born at Waikanao in 1855, and spon’t praetieally all her life in ihis district, although part e.f her early eduoa (ion was received at Nelson and. the remainder al Otalsi. The late ‘.Mrs Barrett, who was known for her many kindly acts and verv generous nature, was the daughter of the late Mr W. Parana, M.P. She had enjoyed good health until recently, and only two or three weeks ago had to take to her lied. Mrs Barrett was twice married, her first husband being the late Mr Popata Tanghno, while in 1912 she married Air BaVrntt. It is hoped to he able to open theOtaki Bowling Club’s season about the middle of next month.
