TAXATION SYSTEM

INTENDED ALTERATIONS. MR S A A 7- AGE INTER A’IEAVED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. That the Government is in earnest over a reduction in taxation was an assurance given by lit. Hon. M. J. Savage when the question of the session’s leg.slation was discussed, and lie mentioned the Budget as an outstanding item. An expert committee lias spent months investigating the taxation system. “They were given a wide field to work on and their report should bo ready for Hon. W. Nash to deal with and there will be no unnecessary delay. AVe were in earnest about making the investigation and we are still in earnest about taxation reduction, notwithstanding what our political opponents say.” The Premier naturally declined to give a hint whether the sales and income tax would be affected, nor could be say whether the Finance Minister would be able to introduce amending legislation in the coming session. “Revision of the taxation,” he added, “must, of course, be faced as early as possible, and if it is possible to do anything before November it will bo done, but i will not make a promise we might not be able to give effect to. The incidence of taxation is not equitable to-day. Everyone knows it, and we have to alter it, and the fact that Air Nash and I have had to be away lias not helped to get things SLiaigiitoncd out. ,,
