CHAMPIONSHIP NEARING END. SATURDAY’S SURPRISE. The Association football competition matches held under the auspices of the Manawatu Football Association on Saturday afternoon provided a surprise when St. Andrew’s suffered their second defeat of the season, this time a.t the hands of Rovers. Had St. Andrew’s won the game they would have been assured of the senior championship. The ground was in a firm condition. The games resulted, as follow: , Senior. —Rovers 1 v. St. Andrew’s 0; Thistle 5 v. Athletic 2. Fourth grade. —Te Awe Awe 2 v. Rovers 0; Y.M.C.A. a bye. Fifth grade. St. Paul’s 1 v. Y.M.C.A. 0; Technical 1 v. Rovers 0. Primary.—Convent 1 v. St. Andrew’s match were: Rovers. —Zimmerman, Oman, Kendall, Laing, F. Hart, Wagstaff, K. Anderson, D. Anderson, Holden, Williams, Smillie. St. Andrew’s.—Chilton, Broughton, Collis, McSheffrey, Thompson, Blummont, Lock, Turnbull, Bell, Gatley, Horne. . St. Andrew’s played against the wind in the first half, and the game was not without thrills. What the Rovers lacked in speed they made up for in subtleness. The Rover forwards were frequently in the St. Andrew’s penalty area, but Chilton, St Andrews ’keeper, .was at the peak of his form, and their innumerable attempts to goal were frustrated. Alternate toot and headwork carried the game into the Rover goalmouth, but Oman retrieved the ball and sent it back. The next invasion of the Rover territory gave Zimmerman his 1 chance to prove his ability as a g° ahe . f n , .f time neidisappoint his team. The only goal ot the match came when the R°ver forwards invaded St. Andrew s goalmouth ancl Williams scored. Up and d ™ n . H ensued until a further scramble tefoie the St Andrew’s area resulted in Lock taking the ball down the field until Oman B frustrated the move. A free kick granted soon afterwards was taken from an easy distance by Me Sheffrev. The ball curved down nicely but Zimmerman kept his charge intact bv forcing the Kali over the bar. ,\t the final whistle tbe score stood unaltered—Rovers 1, St. Andrews ml. The referee was Mr Hesketh. Soon after tbe commencement of the match ft Rover player Holden collided with another player and sustained slight concussion. Ho was attended by a member of tbe St. John Ambulance Brigade and was able to continue. ATHLETIC v. THISTLE.
The teams in tlie Athletic v. Thistle match were as follow: Thifitle. Kempson, Grant, U.
Downes, Petersen, Moore, Wackrow, T. Downes, Watson, W. Allan, Blaikie. Athletic. —Fairclough, Allan, SuLlivan, Armstrong, C. Hart, Crowe, Warner, Donovan, Brougham, Annabell, Dingwall. The Athletic defence was commendable, while their opponents’ attack and combination were all that could be desired. Blaikie (Thistle) and Dingwall (Athletic) were both in good form. Blaikie (3) and W. Allan (2) were the scorers for Thistle and Dingwa.ll and Annabell shot the Athletic goals. The referee was Mr Anderson.
