BASKETBALL.
VISIT BY REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS. . Representative basketball teams from fifty miles around—Wanganui, Horowhemia, Bush, Eeilding, andTe Kawau—were entertained by the Manawatu Basketball Association on Saturday afternoon, the idea being to provide return matches on their own ground. This was not a tournament, and each team was called upon to play two games. There were 132 players in action. Weather conditions were perfect and the games were played on the Technical School grounds, in Grey Street. Some fine play was witnessed. and the teams were to be congratulated on their excellent knowledge of the technique of the game and for the spirit in which tliev entered into ilie matches. Although Manawatu were not successful in winning all their games the teams compared favourably with the visitors. Miss L. A. Brown, president of the association, welcomed the visitors and spoke of- the advantages of such games in enlarging the experience of the players before going on to the Dominion tournament. Praise is due to Miss F. Ross and Miss J. Barrie who were responsible for the arrangements. The capable supervision of the afternoon tea arrangements by Mesdames Payne and Wollerman, assisted by some of the girls was appreciated. Following were the A teams: Manawatu. —Misses P. Payne, T. Following were the detailed results (referees’ names in brackets'): A grade.—Manawatu drew with Wanganui, II —11 (Miss Vau+ier); Manawatu B (senior) lost to Bush. s—ll (Miss Brown): Horowhenua beat Wanganui, 16—11 (Mrs Russell); Manawatu lost to Horowhenua, 15 — 20 (Miss Brown); Te Kawau beat Manawatu B. 18—15 (Mrs Davison). B grade.—Horowhenua heat Wanganui. 9 —‘4 fMrs Davison): Manawatu beat Bush. o—s (Mrs Lewis); Manawatu beat Fmlding, 7—l (Mr Lewis) ; Bush beat Wanganui, 13—2 (Mrs Davison); Horowhenua beat Feilding 9—2 (Mrs Sandilands) ; Manawatu beat Wanganui, 10—5 (Miss Rankin).To prevent water tasting of smoke when boiled on a fire, place a small piece of wood, similar to a match-stick, to float on the top of the water.
