(From Our Own Correspondent.) v FOXTON, Aug. 6. Ftr A. N. Smith, of Christehurch, a's visiting hi* brother, Mr G. F. Smith. Mrs T Kane has left for a holiday visit to Auckland. Mr' Kane will also visit the northern city at the week-end for the purpose of attending the Teachers Grading Appeal Board meeting to he hold in Auckland on Monday next, Mr Kano being the teachers’ representative on the board. Mr II Colev is confined to his bed with an indisposition. Mr 11. A. Haiinay has been compelled to enter hospital for surgical treatment. He is reported to he making good progress after an operation. Mr H. T. Betty, who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital for some time past is reported to bo making excellent, progress. Mr Geo. Rough, junr., is an inmate of the PalmcrstV North Hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis. He is reported to be making satisfactory progress. The first birthday of the local branch of the Mother*’ Union was held in the Anglican schoolroom yesterday. Some seventy visitors present from Tokomaru. nhant»cn, Terraco End, and AH Saints Church, Palmerston North. A short address was Erivcn in the church bv Rev. Mr Ramson, of Terraco End, and he also took the opportunity of congratulating Rev. E. W. Burgin on having formed a branch ot the union in Foxton. Later during a serial hour appreciated items were given by Mcsdnmes Bingham, of Palmerston North and \V M. Thomas, of Foxton. Mrs J. 6. Hornblow, of Palmerston North won a competition. At afternoon tea a handsome birthday cake, made and iced by Mrs Mulard, of Bainessc, occupied pride of place. The hostesses were Mcsdames E. \V. Burgin, E. Thano, E. Francis, 11. Morgan, Hofmann (2), Shailer (2), and T. East. Results of the bogey competition played on the Herrington link* on Wednesday afternoon are Senior: Miss A. Ncylon 1, Mrs S. E. Crawford 2, Miss E. Barber 3. Junior: Mrs R. C. Hornblow 1. Mrs T. Kane 2. Mcsdames E. Bryant and 11. Dustin, equal, 3. . At tbe usual fortnightly meeting of U. Lodge. A.D. Sis. Titcombe presided. One new member was initiated. The presentation of a P.A. collar and diploma was made to P.A. Bno. Thomsen by P.D.P. Bro. E. Titcombe. At the monthly meeting of tbe Methodist Ladies’ Social Guild Mrs R. Grice (president) presided. A compel ition was won by Mrs IT. Berry and at the conclusion of afternoon tea a vote of thanks was accorded tbe hostesses, Mcsdames Parkin, J. F. Riches, and Miss B. Smith. At a meeting of the committee of the Foxton Tennis Club a lengthy discussion took place concerning the condition and upkeep of the courts, and it was decided that the matter be held over until the annual, mooting. _ Tho representatives of the Foxton High School Old Pupils’ Association’s Ping Pong Club boat a team from the Oroua Downs Club bv a considerable margin in an in-ter-club match played in Foxton. The results were- Foxton A 29 games, Oroua Downs 4 7; Foxton B 26 games, Oroua Downs B 10.
