A BRILLIANT ROUND.
SCHOOLING AT RICCARTON. Though it' had boon stated that Brigadorc was not to school over the Iliccarton country before he starts in the _ Steeples to-morrow, lie was sent over the big fences on Saturday. A large crowd of track watchers waited patiently for a schooling task over tho main steeplechase fences by Irish Comet (J. F. Fergus) and Brigadore (C. Thomson). Although the course was not open for general work, special permission was granted in this case owing to neither horse having had an opportunity previously of jumping over tho big fences. The task was delayed owing to tho late arrival of the riders from the North Island. Track watchers had every reason to be pleased with tho wait, as both horses gave a display seldom seen on the eve of tho National meetings, says a southern exchange. They started off by jumping Cutts’s and, without any semblance of a mistake on the part of cither, completed a circuit by a hold effort over Cutts’s again. Brigadore attracted attention by his excellent jumping, which, however, showed more exertion than that of Irish Comet, who is undoubtedly a remarkably clover fencer. The latter did not show the sarno waste of action as his mate and this is an asset gained by more experience that is likely to stand to him when the long journey has to'be mastered. Both horses are sure to carry strong support to-morrow, - but those who had the privilege of watching the two in action on Saturday will be prepared to see Irish Comet faro tho better with the colours up.
