SHIP BOMBED.
ATTACKED BY THREE ’PLANES
Received August 7, 9.55 a.m. ALGIERS, Aug. 6,
The ship British Corporal arrived today and reports that three monoplanes bombed her for an hour There were no casualties but slight damage was done.
When the crew attempted to take to the boats the ’planes swooped down and machine-gunned them, forcing them to take shelter.
It is reported that ’planes also bombed the Italian steamer Mongioia when aiding the British Corporal, seriously wounding the master, Captain Verrito.
A London cable says the British Corporal was homeward bound, laden with benzine, when she was attacked. The hrst news of the bombing came from Marseilles, when it was reported that the vessel had sent out an S.O.S. imploring assistance. The Admiralty stated later, however, that the British Corporal had cancelled her S.O.S. and was going to Algiers.
