BIG MARTON TEAM.

TRANSFER TO AWAPUNI. AT END OF AUGUST. (By “Spectator.”) With hia big etring of horses, including such good performers as Clarion Ca.II, Hunting Queen, The Buzzer, The Bigot, and Chief Hanger, the latter three of whom have returned to his stable after having been quartered at the Grange Stud, Wcstmere, for some months, the Alarton trainer, U. G. Morris, will establish himself at tlie end of the month ill the new stables being prepared for his team at Awapuni.

New Zealand Cup Prospect. Lowcnborg is being given plenty of long steady work, with sharp finishing sprints, by 0. Cox at llawcra, and is in great condition. He looks a distinct Now Zealand Cup prospect. Ho should bo prominent in distance events this season. Zai-onc tho dain of Lowcnborg, and Mood Pulp have been booked to Iliad. Zarcnc was got by Chief Hulcr—Crown Lady, by Crown Imperial ll—Molly, by Mystification, and travels back to tho Pulchra taproot. Mood Pulp was got by Pkipcr Money—-Chile Forost, an imported maro by Sundridgo or Dairy Bridge—Tubbcrcurry, by Captivation.

New Zealand’s Share. New Zealand-bred horses won 131 races in Australia during tho past season, including many important events.

Leg in Plaster. Banker’s Choice, a half-brother by Paper Money to Pontv, broke a small bone in one of hi 3 front legs recently and the :inib is at present in plaster of paris. This four-year-old had beon working well prior to the mishap and was considered by his trainer, M. B. Edwards, to ho a galloper above the ordinary. It is doubtful if Banker's Choice will recover sufficiently to enable him to race.

Happy Night's Breeding. Happy Night, who finished close up behind tho placed horses in _ the Maiden Stakes at Riccarton recently, is a well-bred novico. Ho is a bay colt, by Night Raid from Gfty Hound, by Gay Lad from Prayer M T hccl (a half-sister to Entreaty, the dam of Phar Lap), Happy Night, who is owned by Mr W. 0. Rutherford, North Canterbury, cost 240gns as a yearling. Hawera Trained Horses. Tho season just closed has been a successful one for Hawera trained horses. Aided by Wotan’s Melbourne Cup win, the centre won over £15,000. J. Fryer again

beaded tho list of trainers with 10 wins, 23 seconds and 25 thirds, and stakes amounting to £10,624. Through l'rieslands successes O. Cox won £1283. Mr J. B. Kilev, who last year won £1620 with Onewhetu, secured £ll49—lnternational £715, and Onewhetu £425. Notiuin, in 16 starts, was only three times unplaced, winning £663. Lowcnborg collected £7BO, and Lo Grand £375.

Royal Appellant Well. Although ho has not been required to do anything serious in recent weeks, Royal Appellant is looking bright and muscular and he should bn capable of a solid effort when next raced. Royal Appellant is a capablo performer up to a mile and a quarter and should do further good service for his owner this season, says an exchange. Trial For Shy.

By finishing third in the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday tho performance of Shy was a good Winter Cup trial. There were only three horses behind him at one stago of tho race and he is reported to havo finished very attractively over the last two furlongs. As Shy has previously shown his ability to sec out a solidly-run mile his prospects next week cannot bo overlooked. P. Burgess, haa been engaged to rido tho chestnut gelding in the M'inter Cup. Valmint Recovers.

Valmint has mado a good recovery from the ailment that prevented him completing Iris engagements at the M’cllington winter meeting last month. He did not go back much as the result of the trouble, as he was worked on the lead, and ho is now looking as well as ever. It is intended to •givo Valmint his next race at tho l’akuranga meeting. A Cheap Yearling.

Dictato drew No. 1 in the Brabazon Handicap at Christchurch last Saturday (says a southern writer), and as ho has invariably been slow to get going from the barrier that position was not pleasing to his supporters, and this no doubt contributed towards tho gelding being much more moderately supported than had been expected. Surprisingly enough, Dictate was the first to show out, and probably would have been able to hold his position had his rider not- steadied him in behind tho loaders with two furlongs covered. Dictate, who cost Mr M. O’Brien 50 guineas as a yearling, and lias won more than £SOO in stakes, is, a typical Chief Ruler, and it would not be surprising if he developed into an important handicap winner in the new season. On Saturday Concertpitch gave him 251 b, and there will be 241 b between them in the M’inter Cup, and the extra furlong should favour the lighterweighted candidate. Indications tliereforo point to Dicate again finishing in front. Waipa Club's Profit.

A profit of £I4OB on the December meeting, and £729 on the June meeting, as compared with £6lO and £512 on the meetings held the previous season, was reported at a meeting of tho M'aipa Racing Club, and this was regarded as highly gratifying, especially in view of the fact that the abandonment of the race meeting in May cost the club well over £2OO.

Newcomer To Ellerslie. Among the newcomers to Ellerslie is a two-year-old filly by Captain Bunsby from Duchess Eudorous, by Eudorous — Acrospirc, by Malster. She is a neat youngster, and, as she is a half-sister to Royal Tea and Deputy Ruler, there is reason to believe that she will display galloping ability. Her owner, Air C. AI. Emanuel, has recommissioned the five-vear-old gelding Trcvaco, by The Ace from Charis. As a two-year-old Trovace was highly regarded and was sent to Sydney, where ho ran second in the Nursery Handicap at Victoria Park in May, 1935. However, his racing was restricted owing to unsoundness and he has been off the scene for about two years. Wotan’s Cup Weight. “I did not expect that he would bo handicapped at any more than about 8.6 for tho Alolbourne Cup, and they gat e him 9.0,” said J. Fryer after ho reached Melbourne. He said that with Wotau at his best, ho would fear most the younger horses, whose form as threo-ycar-olds was still to bo disclosed. Asked how he accounted for tho poor showing Wotan had made in Sydney in the autumn, Fryer replied : “It is easily explained. He came straight from a very cold summer in New Zealand to a very hot autumn in Sydney, and he could not adapt liimself to the abrupt change.” Second Australian Win.

Aero King gained his second success in Australia a few days ago at Aloorcfield. Ho showed promising form at Ellcrslio and Avondale prior to his departure, and on the latter course in April he ran second to Airam in the Oakley Handicap. Heroic’s Last Home.

A few months ago Heroic became of no further uso as a sire, and was to have been sent to Oakleigh, in the Wiclclen Valley, to spend tho remainder of his days. Mr Kellow a few weeks ago purchased Woodlands, a few miles outside Alclbourne, and is anxious to have Heroic there. Air Kellow intends to livo at Woodlands, and Heroic will always bo under his eye. Iho horso will tako up hie quarters there as soon a 3 the yard being constructed for him has been completed.

Pink Coat's Progeny. Pink Coat, a brilliant racehorse, whoso career on the track was cut short through unaoundneM, is represented at Riccarton by three youngsters, all tho property of their breeder, Air D. Grant (says the Christchurch Star-Sun). 'lhey are in the stablo of D. E. Cotton, who will take them along quietly with a view to racing late in tho coming season. A full-sister to Kinnottll, a chestnut, with n lighter inane and tail, immediately takes tho eye. She is the same colour as her sire, and if. sho possesses anything approaching his racing qualities will be good. Her dam, Lady Links, was bred by Hon. J. ID. Ormond in 1914, being by King Alark from Links, a St. Andrew mare. A black filly is from the Au6tralian-bred mare Denise, who is by Cistercian (imp.) from Symmetric. Like her stablematcs, she is well grown and looks liko developing into a sprinter. Also the progeny of an Australian-bred dam is a grey colt from Donetta, who favours his dam in colour. Donetta was tho result of the mating of imported Chrysolaus with Lady Trobia, a Sir Dighton mare. This colt, though timid at present, is solidly built, and ho may prove to be the best of thto lot. Silvanus To Return.

Silvanus is getting through some solid road work at Hawera propartory to being placed in training agaid. It is understood that the Nigger Minstrel—Airway filly will ho placed under the care of the Waverley trainer, G. Reid, shortly.
