MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
COMMITTED FOIt SENTENCE. Charged with stealing a letter at Halcombe on Juno 26 containing a cheque for £3 14s, a Maori, Turtle 'fume, appeared before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday and, after pleading guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Tume was also charged with endorsing tho name of Taine Tume to the cheque and causing Miss A. E. Rogers to act upon the cheque as genuine. Mr C. F. Treadwell appeared for accused and bail wa.s allowed in a surety of £SO. Detective J. Murray, who conducted tho prosecution on behalf of tho police, said accused was in the Halcombe Hotel on June 26 when a letter was brought to him containing a cheque for Taino Tume. Accused endorsed and cashed the cheque in the bar. He lia.d had a few drinks before that, hut he knew the cheque was for his sister-in-law, Mrs Taine Tntno. On July 17 accused called at her home end refunded to her the full amount of the cheque.
