MAKINO
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MAKING, Aug. 6. There was a large attendance at the Makino Ilall to farewell Mr and Mrs R. Gavigan and family, who are leaving the district to take over a farm near Ashhurst. The large number present testified to their popularity. They have resided in the district for 17 years. The gathering was arranged by the residents and ir took the j form of a social, music being, played by I local talent for community ringing and dancing. Mr AVI P. Bickers acted as M.C. The winners of the novelty dances were: Gay Gordons, Airs W. Huddleston and Air l'. Gatchell; Monte Carlo. Alisa R. T hurston and AJr R. ltitcliic; spot waltz, Air and Mrs Mephatn. The sticks game was won by Mr G. Pilcher and Alisa J. Nairn; Mrs U. Gavigan was the winner of a wrapper game. Mr Bickers, on behalf of the residents, eulogised the many fine qualities of the guests of the evening ns settlem. They and their family were always to the fore in any matters appertaining to the welfare of the neighbourhood, and lie trusted that they would have many happy years in their new home. As a tangible expression of their feeling toward Mr and Airs Gavigan, he asked them lo accept a metal beaten brass firo screen and kerb. Alisw Doris Laing, on behalf of the young friends; of tho district, presented to Miss Leila Gavigan a crystal jewel box, and on behalf of Ilia old school friends Air lan Simpson presented to Gordon Gatigan a shaving set in a leather case. Baby Shirley Gavigan was tho recipient of a toy koala bear presented by Ngairo Slialders. Air Douglas Hills, on behalf of the Ping Pong Club, spoke in terms of appreciation of the work and play of Gordon Gavigan. He presented him with a pair of leather gloves, with the club’s best wishes. Air R. Gavigan was received with musical honours. Ho thanked Air Bickers and those associated with hint for arranging tho gathoring and for the beautiful gilts and the expressions of best wishes. Ho took it as a groat compliment to his family and himself that there was such a largo gathering. Anything ho had done or Ins family had been a great pleasure to them. Neither he nor his family would forget tho happy yeans spent in Makino. Gordon Gavigan thanked his young friends and the Bing Pong Club for their, gifts ana wished them good luck in tho future. After supper tho dance continued, during which Aliss Jean Nairn gave a recitation. Apologies for absence were received from Airs Prousc, Air and Airs and Aliss Dinah Davies, and Air Amor and Aliss Ida. Amor. Amongst thoso present were: Mr and Mrs Gavigan, Mr and Airs P. R. Gavigan, G. Reid, V. Petersen, J. and R. Thurston, L. Baker. V. Greet), K. Pilcher, N. and J. Fraser, J. Nairn, Alcssrs Hiriop, R. D. Humphrey, A. .McKenzie, I. Reid,’ 11. Nairn, L. Green, G. Gavigan.R. Petersen, Huddlestone. Ritchie, D. Hills, B. ITuirslon, and 1. Simpson. Thore was a record attendance of fifty players at the recent euchre tournament. Tho prizes, which wero donated by Airs A. Wilton and Air W. D. 11. Baker, were won by Airs J. Amer and Air D. AlcGrcgor. and the scaled prizes went to Airs P. R. Simpson and Mr W. Reid. Dancing was enjoyed until midnight. Aliss G. Reid and Air 11. Ritchie were Iho winners of (he door tickets for the next euclirc tournament. After staying with her two daughters.
Mrs P. R. Simpson, and Mrs J. N. Cummings, Mrs S. J. Reid is now on a visit to lier son, Mr C. 11. Reid, of Bunnythorpc. Miss Jean Thurston is home again after spending a holiday in the Hamilton district. Mr and Mrs A. H* Laing are homo again after spending a motoring holiday in the north. Mr and Mrs L. 11. Sandbrook have returned home nfter spending a holiday in the Taranaki district. Mrs M. MacDonald is spending a holiday with friends at Patea. The friends of Mrs G. Roberts will be pleased to learn that she is now home from hospital. Mr R. Hills, who lias been on holiday in Wellington and the llutt, is home again.
