HOCKEY
NOTES AND COMMENTS. CHAMPIONSHIP TABLES. (By “Bully.”) The championship tables of the Manawatu Hockey Association are: — MEN’S SENIOR. Goals
Saturday’s hockey games very nearly produced two major surprises. Both C. 0.8. and Broadway B with an ounce of luck would have beaten their respective opponents—Broadway A and Phoenix. The game between C. 0.8. and Broadway A, played at a very fast pace throughout, was quite an interesting and attractive exhibition. C. 0.8. played their best hockey so far this season, revealing that team-work and combination which has been lacking in previous games. Their forwards, while tiring badly in the second spell, more than held their own with the Broadway men. The latter, who are now certai'n championship winners, appeared on the day rather stale and listless. Sound Defence.
Both sides owe a lot to their defence L. Hart and Drinkwater for Broadway, and W. Sutton and Fuller for C. 0.8., played sterling games. A much improved forward. A. Nesbit, shot a very neat goal for Old Boys and, taken all round played the best forward gajne. C. Ward impressed as an attacking forward. . Congratulations.
Broadway A have been very near champions for some years now, and if they carry off the honours this year, as seems certain, they deserve hearty congratulations. They have a young team, ably led by O’Brien, and if they hold together they will he tough to beat for many years yet. A Close Call.
Broadway B have not won a game this year, but have given several teams a tough battle lately. On Saturday they put on their best game this season. Phoenix, with Morgan and Lofts away, appeared to take things very easy, but wore jolted into action shortly after half-time, when the B team drew level at 2-all. Broadway’s men, however, continually speculated and although their backs, with G. Scales outstanding, worked very hard, they could not keep the Phoenix forwards out. Amongst the latter, E. Pink and P. Comber are proving quite an asset to the team, and their form has been very consistent since they joined Phoenix. Broadway have a new forward in R. Wallis who has strengthened their forward line considerably. On Saturday he gave a very good exhibition. A player who also has improved his game js A. Ronberg. There was no more honest a toiler in either team than this lialf-back. Runners-Up.
It appears that Phoenix will emerge ■runners-up in the championship. They owe their position to three drawn games earlier in the season. Phoenix’s three games with Broadway resulted in a draw, a 2—l victory to Broadway, and a 4—l victory to Phoenix, so on actual goals Phoenix proved superior; however, the latter team were not quite so powerful earlier in the season. Taken on the whole, the hockey has been gradually improving and we have not a great deal to fear in representative matches.
