GOVERNMENT CRITICISED.
RELIEF WORK AND SICKNESS. “I criticised the last Government and now 1 want to criticise this Government,” said the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansion!), when opening the spring fair conducted by the Palmerston North Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, yesterday. When a man on relief work was Laid up through sickness or sorao accident ho received sustenance, or pay, lor three weeks, pointed out Mr Mansford, and after that time he had either to get out -of bed —as one man had done last week—or receive charitable aid. That was throwing' work directly on the Hospital Board or the Women's Auxiliary. If the money could he found when a man was well, then it could be found when be was sick. The present Government, or any other Government, should accept the word of a doctor if a man was not fit fa go to work. That he did not think it fitting to accept the Mayor's challenge was the comment made by Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., who followed the Mayor in spea.kink “The Mayor, knows full well that there is a proper place to discuss those matters and this is certainly not it,” he added.
